FAQ
Mount Rose Music – Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to our FAQ page. We know high-end audio can bring up a lot of questions—about tubes, gear, condition, shipping, and even hiss. Whether you're a long-time audiophile or just stepping into the world of premium sound, we’re here to help you get the answers you need. Below you'll find the most common questions we hear from our customers—organized, clarified, and made easy to understand.
🟩 GENERAL QUESTIONS
How do I know I'm getting a fair price for my demo or used gear?
We evaluate every piece of used equipment with care. Our team checks market data, sales trends, condition, reliability, and cosmetic wear. The result: pricing that’s honest, competitive, and backed by experience.
Are your prices negotiable?
Not during our Relocation Sale. All items are priced to reflect condition, quality, and testing. Every month, prices may drop on unsold demo items—so feel free to wait… or strike while it’s still available.
Why are your condition ratings more conservative than others?
We under-promise and over-deliver. Our 8/10 might be someone else’s "mint." We rate with integrity so you’re pleasantly surprised when your gear arrives.
Do you work with businesses?
Yes—we partner with installers, retailers, and manufacturers. If you’re interested in resale or trade-in support, reach out. We love working behind the scenes to support your customer experience.
🟩 PURCHASING & PICKUP
Can I pick up my purchase in person?
Yes—local pickup is available at our San Clemente or Las Vegas showrooms (by appointment). We don’t ship gear between locations, but local delivery/setup may be possible.
What if something’s wrong with my order?
We back every purchase with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee and 90-day warranty. If there’s an issue, contact us—we’ll make it right.
🟩 USED EQUIPMENT
How old is this unit?
If we know, we’ll tell you. Otherwise, use the serial number in the listing to ask the manufacturer.
Is it a Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 version?
Check the listing. If not noted, contact the manufacturer using the serial number.
Does it come with a warranty?
Used gear generally doesn’t include the original warranty. But we provide a 90-day Mount Rose Music Certified Pre-Owned Warranty (excludes disc players).
What condition is it in?
We’ll disclose any flaws and show photos. If no issues are mentioned, you can assume it’s clean and tested.
Does it include original packaging/manuals?
We list everything included. If the original box or manual is missing, we’ll let you know—and we double box for safety.
Will it work with my system?
If it’s part of our inventory, we can offer insight. Otherwise, we recommend audio forums for compatibility questions.
Can I audition used gear?
Used items are pre-packed, but local inspection can be arranged (no hookups). Auditions are not offered for used gear.
What’s your return policy for used gear?
All used sales are final unless noted. Most items come with our 90-day Certified Pre-Owned Warranty. Shipping is non-refundable.

🟩 TUBE FAQ
My new tube is noisy, but old ones are fine. Defective?
Probably not. Try cleaning the socket, reseating the tube, or switching slots. Often it’s a contact issue.
How long do tubes last?
Power tubes: ~2,500 hours
Signal tubes: ~10,000 hours
Install a new set—if it sounds better, it's time.
How should I handle vintage tubes?
Don’t touch printed labels. Handle gently. Vintage boxes matter to collectors.
Best way to compare tubes?
Use one set for a day, then switch. Frequent swapping wears out sockets.
Is it normal for tubes to flash at startup?
Yes—for small European tubes. Not for power tubes. If a power tube flashes, shut down immediately.
How do I bias power tubes?
Follow your amp’s instructions carefully. Improper biasing can damage tubes or amps.
Should I leave my tube gear on 24/7?
Not recommended. Turn off when not in use to extend tube life.
What’s microphony? Should I use tube dampers?
Tubes can vibrate. Dampers help but may change the sound. Experiment to your taste.
🟩 TUBE TROUBLESHOOTING
How do I find a noisy or dead tube?
Swap tubes left to right. If the issue moves, you’ve found the problem. Test in pairs to isolate the bad one.
How often should I check bias?
Every 2–3 months (unless auto-biasing). Incorrect bias impacts tone and tube life.
Common biasing mistakes:
- Don’t play music during biasing
- Connect speakers before testing
- Use correct voltage/meter setting
- Always check both channels
- Bias before powering on new tubes
Amp channel is dead—now what?
Check the fuse, then inspect tubes. Look for red plating, dim glow, or imbalance. Reset bias if needed.
What’s the deal with blue glow in tubes?
Faint blue = normal. Bright blue/purple inside plates = bad tube. Power down immediately.
Why does my bias keep jumping?
Small fluctuations are fine. Big swings mean a failing tube—shut down and replace.
🟩 PACKING & SHIPPING
Why use fresh boxes for shipping?
Used boxes = denied insurance claims. Always use fresh, double-walled packaging.
Should I double box?
Yes. We double—or triple—box to protect your gear. Always follow original packing methods if reselling or returning.
Bottom line:
Fresh boxes and smart packing preserve resale value and prevent damage. Worth every extra dollar.
🟩 NOISE, HISS & SYSTEM HUM
Why do I hear hiss even with the volume down?
It’s normal, especially in high-gain systems. Don’t worry unless it’s loud during playback.
I changed components and now hear more hiss. Why?
It's likely gain/sensitivity mismatch—not a flaw. High-efficiency speakers + high gain = more hiss.
Should I listen for hiss at the tweeter?
No. That’s not real-world listening. Focus on how the music sounds, not background noise.
Can tubes cause hiss?
Yes, but rarely in both channels. If unsure, swap tubes and listen.
Is hiss caused by impedance mismatch?
No. Hiss is about gain and sensitivity, not impedance.
